Jim is out of town this holiday weekend, enjoying a weekend with his college kids and taking in the BYU vs. University of Washington football games.  Tessa and I decided to do a little exploring on our own.

We headed over to North Portland to check out Tasty n Sons which had been recommended to us by several people.  The restaurant is located at 3808 N. Williams and is only open for brunch – from 9 to 3 p.m.  We can’t wait to go back again.  There is a grilled cheese sandwich on the menu calling my name.

Food is served family style and the menu is made up of “smaller plates” and “bigger plates”.  We went for  a combination of the two. We loved being able to get “smaller plates” because that way we got to taste lots of different things!  We ate at the communal table and had fun visiting with the others at the table with us.  They didn’t even mind when I kept taking pictures of my food!

I loved the water bottles on the table.  I recently bought a few similar to it at Ikea and now I can’t wait to use them on my dinner table.

We arrived early enough that we didn’t have to wait but by the time we left, about 10:30 a.m. there was a nice long wait.  I always see that as a good sign.

Since it was just Tessa and I we chose three things from the menu but could have gotten a lot more.  Just another reason to go back!

Our first choice was the Chocolate Potato Doughnut with crème anglaise.  We ordered two so we didn’t have to share. Yummy, but I thought the creme anglaise was the best part!

Each dish is brought out as it is prepared so everything is fresh.

Our next delivery was the Auntie Paula’s French Toast with peach-maple & whipped cream.  It was amazing.  Maybe the best french toast I have ever had.  The peach maple sauce was to die for and I wanted to lick the plate.

We only got a half order of the french toast so that we could save room for this…

…a Fried Egg & Cheddar Biscuit with fried chicken.  We are not big fried egg fans so we got it with scrambled eggs.  The biscuit was light and flaky and the whole thing was so good.

We highly recommend Tasty n Sons and can’t wait to go back!  Maybe we will see you there.  There are also lots of fun little shops on the same street so if you have to wait there is plenty to keep you busy.

Enjoy!

Ruby Jewel Scoops Ice Cream

Nothing tastes better than some yummy, creamy ice cream on a warm summer day. Don’t you agree?

We recently tried out the new Ruby Jewel Scoops location at 3713 N. Mississippi.  We are no stranger to Ruby Jewel as we have purchased their delicious ice cream sandwiches at the Portland Farmer’s Market but they now have their own store front on N. Mississippi Avenue so you can get Ruby Jewel ice cream any day of the week!

At the store you can enjoy one of their wonderful ice cream sandwiches or a scoop of their locally made ice cream.  Ruby Jewel has  a fun selection of flavors.  Everything from vanilla bean and fresh strawberry to caramel with salted dark chocolate.

Not only is the ice cream delicious but their housemade waffle cones are one of the best I have ever had.  I believe that ice cream just tastes better on a cone and Ruby Jewel’s waffle cones are light and crisp, not thick and chewy like so many.

Ruby Jewel is a new favorite for our family!  Do you have a favorite ice cream spot in the Portland area?  Leave a comment and let me know!

Portland is a mecca for food carts!

Last Saturday we were doing a little browsing over on N. Mississippi.   There is a great row of food carts on N. Mississippi   – Mississippi Marketplace but we decided to check out a new one we had heard about – a food cart that just serves grilled cheese.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is one of our favorite comfort food.   I think we grew up on grilled cheese and tomato soup at our house.

The Grilled Cheese Grill is located at 1027 NE Alberta Ave., Portland, 97211  and is open starting at 11:30 each day except for Mondays when they are closed.  Check out their website for specific closing hours.

The Grilled Cheese Grill is celebrating their first birthday tomorrow – Tuesday, April 19th so head on down and join the celebration.

The kitchen is run out of a little trailer.

The Grilled Cheese Grill

There is outside seating but the best place to sit is in the bus.

The Grilled Cheese Grill

They have brought in an old school bus and outfitted it with booths and a nice long counter and stools.  Hundreds of old school photos decorate the table top and counter top.  Maybe you’ll see someone you know!

The Grilled Cheese Grill

The painting on the ceiling is amazing and will keep you entertained for hours!

The Grilled Cheese Grill

There are lots of fun grilled cheese combos on the menu or you can make up your own.  Any combination you can think of they will make! (as long as the ingredient is listed on the menu)

We went with The Gabby which was a combination of cheddar, colby jack, swiss, mozzarella on white bread.  We lived dangerous and added potato chips to it – yes, potato chips.  I loved the addition of the salt and the crunch.

The Grilled Cheese Grill

Our second choice was The Pops which was a combination of tomato, Havarti and honey mustard on Dave’s Killer Cracked Wheat – so good and my favorite.  Of course we added the tomato soup too!

The Grilled Cheese Grill

For dessert we couldn’t resist The Jaime especially when it said that “you might need to eat this in private.”

The Jaime was a combination of marscapone, Nutella, and grilled banana on grilled cinnamon swirl.  It was amazing and I don’t even like bananas!!!

The Grilled Cheese Grill

The food was great and how fun is it to be able to eat lunch in a school bus!  Check out The Grilled Cheese Grill!!
